National Burma Action committee New York held a photo commemoration in memory
of lost Burmese lives during the 8.8.88 massacre. The event was held at Ralph
Bunche Park on 43rd street and 1st avenue opposite the United Nations Plaza.
The park was named after a political scientist who was honored a nobel peace
prize
for
negotiations in an armistice agreement between Isreal and four Arab states.
The park, which symbolizes peace was the perfect location for such an event.
Many who passed by took interest as questions were asked as to how Burma came
to be in captivity by its own government.
The photo display, which was a compilation of the works of various different photographers, told the story of how a resource and culturally rich country with peaceful people have become a land of insecure and fear-struck populous.
Ten posters were on exhibition at the Isaiah Wall Plaza. There were
speakers who voiced their demands for democracy in Burma. The
evening was concluded with a candlelight vigil to honor those who were
killed by the ruthless government on this day fifteen years ago.
